(Low Vision Services are for people who have sight problems that are not correctable by glasses or medical treatment.) Effective low vision services enable people to make use of their eyesight. Why is this important? We know that at least 30% of people with learning difficulties have problems with their vision and that this is significantly higher than the average population. Many people are likely to have undiagnosed eye condition including those associated with ageing. Unidentified sight problems can severely undermine peoples quality of life reducing their potential and self-confidence, as well as their enjoyment in everyday activities. Challenging behaviour may be caused by an undiagnosed sight problem. Most people (of all levels of ability) may become distressed and anxious and people with learning disabilities may not be able to explain emotions to others. The results can be dramatic when sight problems are diagnosed and low vision devices (such as magnifiers) then provided. We have attached some case studies. What can you do? Low Vision Services Committees (LVSCs) have been set up across England, their role being to make sure that all people can access these types of services. Underpinning their work is a Low Vision Report that outlines core standards and charges LVSCs to work to plug the gaps in provision and create more and better services. This report is enclosed LVSCs may request additional copies from the LVSI office if they wish to enclose the report. The national sub-group wants LVSCs to regularly discuss the needs of people with learning difficulties. They believe that it is essential that the partnership board is represented on LVSCs. We would ask your board to identify some one to join the local low vision services committee and help create a dialogue between the two groups.
